This series of images document a site specific installation made over a period of three days in the interior of a disused bottle kiln at the Roslyn Works, Stoke on Trent, England, during my residency for the British Ceramics Biennial.
Through constant industrial use the interior of the brick built kiln had built up an intricate and beautiful glazed surface from the intensive firing processes that had happened within it. I wanted to highlight this surface by printing directly from it with soft porcelain, but also over the course of the time spent making the work, I decided I wanted to commemorate the lives and work of all the people who had toiled at this kiln. It was hard and hazardous work firing the quality ware for which Stoke is famous for in these bottle kilns and I collected many stories of the life of these places whilst working there. The pieces are Cameos as a commemoration and reminder of all the lives unknown to me whose hard labour and skill produced the fantastic Stoke pottery and left behind such a beautiful patina of use.
